Dr. Gene Schmidt Middle School Wellness Center
Wellness Center
The idea of a wellness center facility was conceived in 1995 by members of the Bay Shore Middle School Physical Education Department. The key components of their plan were to incorporate interdisciplinary instruction, sophisticated exercise equipment, state-of-the- art heart monitors interfaced with computers and direct feedback on the positive effects of physical exercise and proper nutrition.
On April 23, 1998, the Gene Schmidt Wellness Center opened at the Bay Shore Middle School. This facility, which was increased in size to 2,500 square feet in 2005 and dedicated to a former Bay Shore Superintendent, utilizes sophisticated exercise equipment, state-of-the-art heart monitors and interactive computer programs. Dr. Schmidt, a strong proponent of technology in instruction and athletic/fitness programs, passed away in 1998 after a protracted battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease. His philosophy lives on in the Gene Schmidt Wellness Center. In 2005, a 6,000 square foot wellness center was opened in the Bay Shore High School and later dedicated to V. William Caracci, the longtime chairman of the Bay Shore Wellness Alliance.
