First Annual Polar Bear Walk

There was a wonderful start for the first Bay Shore Wellness Alliance Polar

Bear Walk. The weather proved ideal and the 90 to 100 participants displayed

a holiday spirit and enthusiasm. There were parents with their children, a

number of mothers pushing or hauling baby carriages, some men and women with

their dogs, and some with the attire and look of marathoners. Two

individuals from New York City joined a Bay Shore resident in the walk, as

did one lady from Shirley.

The snow which remained from Monday’s snow storm was not relevant and did

not interfere. It, in fact, was in keeping with the Polar Bear theme of the

walk and contributed to the exhilaration, along with the sunny blue sky, and

the beauty of the walk along the Great South Bay.

Jeanne Edwards led the walk at rather crisp pace, but every one not only

kept up, but finished the 3-mile hike. She is again to be congratulated for

kicking off this wonderful event. And to Judy Cummings for implementing the

Walks.

Many of the participants expressed their appreciation as we walked along,

and expressed the hope of more such organized walks in the future.  They

were assured that there would be more walks, and of course, were encouraged

to make a habit of walking independently themselves, as well as adhering to

a healthy lifestyle. I certainly look forward to the next one as another

Wellness Alliance effort.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
